This doctor-prescribed, weekly treatment is a custom-formulated medication, in a class of medicines known as GLP-1 agonists or analogs.

Every time you eat, hormones are automatically released that tell your brain you are no longer hungry and satisfied. Or maybe even “full” if you have eaten too much! Semaglutide targets the same area of your brain (the hypothalamus) that provides a consistent feeling of satisfaction and not feeling hungry. This sensation of decreased appetite causes you to take in fewer total calories per day. Also, when you do sit down to eat, you feel fuller faster, thereby decreasing the total number of calories you ingest at any given meal.

Other mechanisms that help with hunger control and weight loss include a slowing down of the emptying of your stomach, regulating key hormones such as insulin and glucagon, improving pancreas function, decreasing “insulin resistance”, and slowing down the amount of sugar or glucose your liver makes (gluconeogenesis).

Excess weight is largely a result of eating habits. With busy lifestyles, everyday stress, and our modern food supply; not to mention hormones and genetics, it seems we are set up to fail.
